Paddy O'Brien (født 13. september 1945) er en irsk harmonika -spiller og memoirist, forfatter til The Road from Castlebarnagh: Growing Up In Irish Music og skaberen af Paddy O'Brien Tune Collection: A Personal Treasury of Irish Traditional Music , the første mundtlige samling af irsk traditionel musik.
Liv og karriere
Paddy O'Brien blev født i Castlebarnagh, et lille byland uden for Daingean, County Offaly, i Midlands i Irland. Han er søn af Christopher og Molly O'Brien, der havde en lille gård i Castlebarnagh. Han gik på National School i Daingean og Tullamore Fagskole og blev derefter lærling hos Bord na Mona på Boora, hvor han arbejdede fra 1961 til 1969. Fra en tidlig alder var han interesseret i traditionel musik og spillede i konkurrencer og videre fjernsyn til RTE. I 1969 flyttede O'Brien til Dublin og blev involveret i den irske traditionelle musikscene der.
Paddy O'Brien er en samler af irsk traditionel musik; i en musikalsk karriere, der strækker sig over mere end tres år, har han samlet mere end 3.000 kompositioner - jigs, ruller, hornpipes, airs og marcher, herunder mange sjældne og usædvanlige melodier. Han blev kåret til Oireachtas-mester fire gange, og All-Ireland senior harmonika-mester i 1975. I Irland spillede og indspillede han med Castle Ceili Band og Ceoltoiri Laighean.
I 1978 begyndte Paddy O'Brien at optage og spille i USA, i Washington DC, Saint Louis, Saint Paul, San Francisco, Boston og New York. Han har været med på seks optagelser med Shanachie Records siden 1978, og i 1988 udgav han sit første soloalbum, "Stranger at the Gate", på Green Linnet -etiketten. Hans anden solo -indspilning, "Mixing the Punch", blev udgivet af New Folk Records i 2011, og hans arbejde er blevet inkluderet i liveoptagelser og samlinger af irsk traditionel musik.
O'Brien har undervist på Swannanoa Gathering, Goderich Celtic Week og Catskills Irish Arts Week og på Willie Clancy Summer School, der blev afholdt i Milltown Malbay, County Clare, og har tjent flere gange som en mesterkunstner i Minnesota State Arts Board Folk Arts Lærlingsprogram. Han har spillet og turneret med andre irske traditionelle musikere, herunder James Kelly, Martin Hayes, Susan McKeown, Tommy Peoples, Peter Ostroushko, Patrick Ourceau og andre ved koncerter og festivaler i Nordamerika, Irland og Europa. I 2007 blev han inviteret til at spille irsk traditionel musik for publikum i Moskva.
I 1994 gik O'Brien i gang med et irsk traditionelt musikprojekt for at indspille og samle baggrundsinformation om 500 jigs og hjul fra hans repertoire af traditionelle melodier. Resultatet blev bind 1 af The Paddy OBrien Tune Collection: A Personal Treasury of Irish Traditional Music . I 2011 udgav han The Paddy O'Brien Tune Collection, Volume Two , med yderligere 500 melodier, herunder jigs, ruller, hornpipes, slip jigs og polkas. Et tredje bind af Paddy O'Brien Tune Collection, Volune Three. indeholdende yderligere 500 melodier, blev udgivet i 2013.
O'Brien turnerer i øjeblikket nationalt og internationalt som solomusiker og med sin trio Chulrua, og spiller også danse og koncerter rundt i det amerikanske midtvest med sin syv-delt irske traditionelle musikgruppe, O'Rourke's Feast. Han bor i Saint Paul, Minnesota sammen med sin kone, kriminalforfatteren Erin Hart .
